Green Chile Burgers

      March is here!! Wow! Where did February go?  Anyway, now that it is March I am starting to get excited for Spring and Summer.  And where there is Summer there are barbecues.  With these thoughts of Summer and barbecues I started to crave burgers yesterday.  I like to try different toppings with my burgers and after brainstorming I decided upon, Green Chile Jalapeño Avocado Cheddar Burgers.  That is a mouthful to say.  These burgers were the perfect way to satisfy my burger hankering.  Of course these are not typical burgers.  I needed to find a way to incorporate a healthy way of enjoying a burger.  I replaced my bun with Swiss Chard leaves.  Also instead of sour cream I used nonfat plain greek yogurt to dollop on as a condiment.  This burger was very fresh and satisfying!   Accompanying   the burger I roasted some tomato slices and made some sweet potato fries.  This was a perfectly filling dinner for the Hubs and I.

Burger Layers: Swiss Chard, Avocado, Burger, Greek yogurt, Onion green chile jalapeño medley, Sharp Cheddar and another Swiss Chard leaf.

      If you love burgers, avocado and jalapeños then I am sure you will absolutely love these!   That is why this recipe needs to be bookmarked for a summer of happy grilling with green chile jalapeño avocado cheddar burgers.

  • 4 Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef 
  • 8 green swiss chard leaves
  • 3 oz sharp cheddar cheese mine was made with raw milk
  • 4 oz diced green chiles
  • 2 tbsp. jalapeño slices 
  • 3 oz  Greek Nonfat Plain Yogurt 0% 
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce

Get Cooking:

Burger:  Add to a mixing bowl Ground beef, 1/4 of the onion diced small, 1/2 can of green chiles, 1 tbsp jalapeños, 1 tbsp. worcestershire sauce, about 1/4 cup of the sharp cheddar, 1/4 tsp black pepper, salt and 1/2 tsp garlic powder. Mix all together and form 4 burger patties.  In a frying pan on medium heat add the burger patties.  I like to cover mine and let cook for 2 minutes.  Flip the burgers and allow to cook until desired doneness.

Jalapeño green chile medley:  In a small fry pan on medium heat add remaining 3/4 sliced onion.  Let cook add 1 tbsp water to keep from sticking to the pan.  Continue to add water and cook until onions are soft and starting to brown and caramelize.  Add remaining 1/2 can of green chile and 1 tbsp diced jalapeño slices.  Cook for about 2 minutes.  This will be used as a burger topping.

Avocado:  Slice the avocado and remove inside and put into a small bowl.  Mash up the avocado until nice and smooth.  I added about 1/2 tbsp of the jalapeño juice from the jar of jalapeños and salt and pepper.  Set aside, this is used as a condiment.  

Wash and dry Swiss Chard leaves.  

Sweet Potato fries: wash and slice sweet potato sprinkle with pepper and thyme bake in 400 degree oven until soft and browning.  
Tomato:  Wash and slice tomato.  Bake and then broil for about 10 minutes.  

Assemble Burgers and enjoy! Yum, Yum!
